Nepal Telecom (NT) has started installation of equipment to build its second main network in Butwal for WiMax project targeted to offer high-speed broadband internet service. The system will enable the state-owned company to distribute 100,000 internet lines in Western part of the country.

Having completed most of installation works for its first main network in Kathmandu, NT is all set launch WiMax internet service immediately after the Tihaar festival that ends on Nov 15.

The company had earlier targeted to launch the service on Nov 9, but it was delayed due to ongoing work on convergent billing system and testing of the service, according to NT officials.

?We?ve started main equipment installation work in Butwal for WiMax project,? said Rajesh Joshi, an NT spokesperson. He said that the company would first start the high speed data service from Kathmandu and launch service in the country?s West after completion of the installation works.

The NT has installed 47 base transcriber stations in Kathmandu Valley to operate WiMax broadband internet. WiMax is a part of the fourth generation (4G) communication technology that provides high-speed wireless internet service. The NT has signed a $ 10 million contract with a US Company Airspan for the project that will have a total of 200,000 lines covering the Western and Eastern parts of the country, including Kathmandu.

The project is expected to significantly enhance NT?s internet services for residential and official purposes, provide lease line services and build hotspots in public areas such as airport, hospital and bus parks. Customers will have to buy customer premises equipment (CPE)-like USB dongle to avail the service that comes in varied speed. However, the NT is yet to disclose the price for such equipment.

Joshi said that customers could choose among three types of CPE?high capacity outdoor type, indoor type and USB dongle?to get connected to the WiMax technology based internet service.?The service, which has a minimum speed of 256 kbps, will be cheaper than ADSL internet service,? he added.
