Tyga
Loses $16k Legal Battle ...
With His Accountant

EXCLUSIVE

Tyga
gives new meaning to "rack, rack city" by racking up his accountant's credit card bill to the tune of $16k -- and now a judge has ordered him to pay the piper.

Accountant Robert Seltzer claims he and the rapper struck an oral agreement back in 2011 ... in which Tyga could use Robert's CC to charge food, hotel, and transportation while touring -- and then pay him back at the end of each month.

Problem is ... Tyga never paid, so he sued to get his money back -- $13,396, plus interest.

But Tyga missed his court date ... so a judge entered a default judgment in Robert's favor and ordered the rapper to cough up $16,801.67.

We're told Tyga has paid some of the cash back.

Symptoms of Underactive Thyroid (Hypothyroidism) ? What You ...

Studies have shown that women are more likely to suffer from thyroid cancer ? a disease that has been in the news recently. Yes, we're talking about Brook Burke, the 'Dancing with the Stars" host.

If that's not all, the American Cancer Society reveals that almost 30,000 people are diagnosed with this disease every year.

Strangely enough, one of the reasons why thyroid cancer can occur is due to chronic goiter, which in turn, occurs due to the not-so-serious condition of ?underactive thyroid or what is commonly referred to as hypothyroidism.

Thyroid Gland ? An Overview

Shaped in the form of a butterfly, the thyroid gland serves a very important function ? metabolism, if you will.

Located below the Adam's Apple in the human body, what it does is collect iodine from the food we eat, and convert it into three hormones:?thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and calcitonine.

However, it does not work independently since the pituitary gland controls the release of the aforementioned hormones by releasing a thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).

This action by the pituitary gland, in turn, is also controlled by the hypothalamus, and it's only when the latter releases the thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) that the pituitary gland leaps into action.

As mentioned earlier, in producing these hormones (the T3 & T4 hormones, in particular), it contributes to the growth and development of cells in the human body.

Of course, this is not the only function that thyroid gland serves. Some of the other functions include:?regulating blood calcium levels, excess fats, energy,?hormones, oxygen and weight loss.

When the thyroid gland produces just the right amounts of these hormones, metabolism occurs as it should but the issues begin when these hormones are either produced in less (hypothyroidism) or excessive (hyperthyroidism) amounts.?One can only imagine what can happen if there is any disruption amongst these glands.

Of course, the effects of an underactive thyroid can be easily corrected through lifetime treatment.

If underactive thyroid is not treated, even if it isn't as serious as thyroid cancer among others, there are complications that can occur, and can prove to be fatal.

So, it's a good idea to stay abreast of the symptoms of underactive thyroid so as to avoid any complications that can occur in the future.

Symptoms of Underactive Thyroid

Simply put, hypothyroidism is the production of T3 and T4 hormones in negligible quantities, and is a condition, where one can feel life slowly slip away.

Now there are both early and late symptoms, and so let's look at a list of the former:

#1: Fatigue
#2: Cold intolerance (increased sensitivity to cold)
#3: Depression
#4: Muscle cramps and joint pain
#5: Muscle hypotonia (poor muscle tone)
#6: Constipation
#7: Goiter
#8: Thin and brittle fingernails and hair
#9: Paleness
#10: Decreased sweating
#11: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
#12: Osteporosis
#13: Dry & itchy skin
#14: Weight gain & Water Retention
#15: Low heart rate (lesser than sixty beats per minute)

As for late symptoms, here are a few:

#1: Dry puffy skin (visible on the face)
#2: Low basal body temperature
#3: Abnormal menstrual cycles
#4: Thinning of the outer third of the eyebrows
#5: Slow speech ? a hoarse breaking voice

In Closing

So, are there any other symptoms of underactive thyroid that you have noticed in fighting this condition? Has the medication worked? How has it helped you??Please feel free to share your thoughts.

Also, you can read this article about Hashimoto's hypothyroidism.

Barbecue Secrets Revealed!!!-aft-"Amazing Secret Finally Revealed by Retired Kentucky Restaurant Owner Eliminates All Guesswork? And Makes Cooking Up ?Practically Addictive? Barbecue Simple!"

If you REALLY want to cook up some killer BBQ, click here for a special *audio* message!

Now you can learn to make everything you grill or barbecue 100% more flavorful almost overnight, getting the perfect results you could only dream of before? while grilling steak after steak, and rib after rib, exactly how you want it, as consistent as clockwork? and, if you?re like most barbecuers, turning heads at your very next BBQ!

If you?ve ever wanted to cook up barbecue so incredible your guests actually close their eyes, make the "mmmmm" sound, and ask the person next to them if they can believe what they?re tasting? then this will be the most important message you ever read.

My name is Randy Pryor, and until recently, I was your basic BBQ "hack." I had a Weber and some tongs, what else did I need?

Sometimes I?d grill up the meat so it was perfect on the outside, but raw on the inside? then the very next BBQ, using the same equipment, my steaks would be fine on the inside and burnt on the outside.

I remember standing over the grill after everyone left, one emotional hair-trigger away from hauling the whole thing to the dumpster and never even attend another barbecue for the rest of my life.

Doesn?t it drive you nuts? I had no consistency to my cooking at all, even after 20 years of barbecuing regularly. No way to tell how "done" the meat really was.

And it wasn?t for lack of trying, either ? I?d easily dropped several thousand dollars buying whatever equipment the "pro?s" suggested at the time. I just couldn?t make it work.

Quite a few years ago, my wife?s grandfather owned a very successful restaurant in western Kentucky (known to many for their killer BBQ).

In fact, it was so successful that, when it was time to finally retire, the sale of the restaurant allowed him to put enough money away so that he and his wife can live "quite comfortably" for the rest of their lives.

About twice a year, my wife (who, at one time, worked in the restaurant) and I would fly back to Kentucky to visit all her relatives.

When I asked her grandfather if he would teach me how to barbecue (I mean really barbecue) he always declined (?something about me not understanding ?cause I was from California.)

Well, after many trips back east, and much arm-twisting, he finally considered the idea of sharing with me the closely guarded secrets of real BBQ?ing ? the secrets he built his restaurant?s reputation on, and the kind of barbecuing that folks talk about for weeks.

But, he did not want these secrets out in the world for "every Tom, Dick, and Harry." And, he was concerned that his town friends would be very upset if this information was just frittered?

Lady Investors Are Rare, Suggests Lady Investor, Because Women ...

Lady Investors Are Rare, Suggests Lady Investor, Because Women Worry Investing Might ‘Bankrupt’ Their FemininitySpringboarding off of an infamous USA Today infographic (and utilizing a handy Wild, Wild West conceit), finance oracle Whitney Johnson tried her darnedest to unravel the mystery about why female leaders are still a relative rarity in the wide world of investing. It's certainly a puzzle, because, although women are accounting for more of our college grads, are more often earning the bread in a household, and represent just about half of the entire labor force, the USA Today article that sparked Johnson's brief disquisition about ladies in finance found that a mere 22 percent of women are comfortable marionetting a household's purse strings, and a mere 12 percent are seasoned investors.

What's the haps with these numbers? There's no empirical proof to suggest that women suck at investing money anymore than dudes do, so why aren't women breaking through the finance world's glass brick ceiling? Despite the bevy of Old West metaphors at her disposal, Johnson seems initially stumped:

But the fact is that in the Wild West of investing, an Annie Oakley is rare - the realm of investing is still very much a dude ranch. While there may be 1 in 5 women for whom learning to invest is simply an exercise in sharp shooting, for the remaining 80%, I suspect it really is their first rodeo. According to the Bem Sex-Role inventory, society considers a woman to be feminine only within the context of a relationship or when she is giving something to someone. Project this image of the feminine ideal into the world of investing and the only "socially acceptable" roles for women are limited - perhaps doing due diligence as a "helper" or writing a check as a donor.

But lo! There's always an answer or, in this case, a theory masquerading as an answer ? Johnson shares a little morsel of insight about donations that she gleaned from a chat with one of the social entrepreneurs in Fast Company's "League of Extraordinary Women." This social entrepreneur decided to designate her business as a non-profit because, she found, women were much more willing to donate than to invest, which, according to Johnson, is highly "illogical," at least from a financial perspective. Where, then, does this strange upwelling of financial hysteria come from?

So how do we explain the high investing anxiety of four out of ten women? I suspect because, deep down, they fear it will bankrupt their femininity. But if women don't feel comfortable handling their own money, it's unlikely that they'll feel comfortable handling a P&L for their firm - and if you don't feel comfortable with P&L responsibility, you're not going to make it to the top ranks of management.

To be fair, Johnson is more eager to offer investment advice and encouragement than delve very deeply into her pseudo psycho-analytic explanation as to why nearly forty percent of women are anxious about making big financial decisions, but her reasoning, however offhand or casual, points to the very tall and sturdy gender ramparts that largely keep women from assuming positions of authority within America's towering financial fortress (see? we can all have fun with conceits). Maybe investing vis-?-vis donating is perceived as somehow masculine, but then again maybe women are just way more honest about how distressing big financial decisions can be. You'd have to be some kind of a senseless mule not to be intimidated by plunking down the yolk of your nest egg on the stock market and watching it skip merrily away like a ball on a roulette wheel.

Obama touts Hagel, says no decision on defense secretary job

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama offered strong support for former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel as the potential next U.S. defense secretary but said in remarks aired on Sunday that he had not yet decided on a nominee for the Pentagon post.

Hagel is considered a leading candidate to replace outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, but the former Nebraska lawmaker has come under criticism for his record on Israel and for a comment that being gay was an inhibiting factor for being an ambassador.

"I've served with Chuck Hagel. I know him. He is a patriot. He is somebody who has done extraordinary work both in the United States Senate, somebody who served this country with valor in Vietnam," Obama told NBC's "Meet the Press" in an interview taped on Saturday and broadcast on Sunday.

Any nomination for defense secretary must be approved by the Senate where some lawmakers have voiced criticism about their former colleague.

"I think a lot of Republicans and Democrats are very concerned about Chuck Hagel's positions on Iran sanctions, his views toward Israel, Hamas and Hezbollah, and that there is wide and deep concern about his policies. All of us like him as a person," Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said.

"There would be very little Republican support for his nomination, at the end of the day, there will be very few votes," Graham said on Fox News Sunday.

Republican Senator Tom Coburn from Oklahoma said bluntly: "I cannot vote for Chuck Hagel."

Aside from his controversial statements, "he does not have the experience to manage a very large organization like the Pentagon," Coburn said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "If there's a place that we need great management it's the Pentagon."

Senator Richard Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, said on the same television show that Hagel deserved "respect for the service he's given our country in the military and in the Senate" and should be given consideration. "He at least deserves a hearing and an opportunity," he said.

Obama said he had seen nothing that would disqualify Hagel.

The president said Hagel had apologized for his comments related to homosexuality, referred to by NBC's David Gregory in the interview.

"With respect to the particular comment that you quoted, he apologized for it," Obama said.

"And I think it's a testimony to what has been a positive change over the last decade in terms of people's attitudes about gays and lesbians serving our country. And that's something that I'm very proud to have led," he said.

Obama came out in favor of gay marriage in the middle of his re-election bid this year. Earlier in his term he presided over the end of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that prohibited gay men and women from serving openly in the U.S. military.

Hagel, who left the Senate in 2008, has faced questions about his record on Israel.

Some of Israel's leading U.S. supporters contend that Hagel at times opposed Israel's interests, voting several times against U.S. sanctions on Iran, and made disparaging remarks about the influence of what he called a "Jewish lobby" in Washington.

Obama, who has strained relations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has faced questions of his own from the American Jewish community about his approach to the U.S. ally.

Obama said Hagel was doing an "outstanding job" serving on an intelligence advisory board and gave no indication on when he would make his final decision about the defense chief job.

The president has already backed down once from a contentious nomination, choosing Democratic Senator John Kerry to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state rather than going with his presumed first choice, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice, whom many Republicans opposed after she made controversial remarks about the September 11 attacks on a U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans.

It?s been a banner year for anniversary lovers. American Idol celebrated its 10th. YMAK that the text message turned 20. And snack aficionados are surely sad to bid farewell to the year that brought the 100th birthday of the Oreo. (A note on the selection process: 2013 marks the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination and MLK?s ?I Have a Dream? speech, but articles on those events will be everywhere. Need a New Year's Resolution? Choose to Believe in Free Will!

We?re approaching the end of one year and the beginning of another, when people resolve to quit smoking, swill less booze, gobble less ice cream, jog every day, or every other day, work harder, or less hard, be nicer to kids, spouses, ex-spouses, co-workers, read more books, watch less TV, except Homeland, which is awesome. In other words, it?s a time when people seek to alter their life trajectories by exercising their free will. Some mean-spirited materialists deny that free will exists, and this specious claim?not mere physiological processes in my brain?motivates me to reprint a defense of free will that I wrote for The New York Times 10 years ago:

When I woke this morning, I stared at the ceiling above my bed and wondered: To what extent will my rising really be an exercise of my free will? Let?s say I got up right . . . now. Would my subjective decision be the cause? Or would computations unfolding in a subconscious neural netherworld actually set off the muscular twitches that slide me out of the bed, quietly, so as not to wake my wife (not a morning person), and propel me toward the door?

One of the risks of science journalism is that occasionally you encounter research that threatens something you cherish. Free will is something I cherish. I can live with the idea of science killing off God. But free will? That?s going too far. And yet a couple of books I?ve been reading lately have left me brooding over the possibility that free will is as much a myth as divine justice.

The chief offender is The Illusion of Conscious Will (MIT Press, 2002), by Daniel M. Wegner, a psychologist at Harvard. What makes Wegner?s critique more effective than others I?ve read over the years is that it is less philosophical than empirical, drawing heavily upon recent research in cognitive science and neurology. Wegner also carries out his vivisection of free will with a disturbing cheerfulness, like a neurosurgeon joking as he cuts a patient?s brain.

We think of will as a force, but actually, Wegner says, it is a feeling ? ?merely a feeling,? as he puts it ? of control over our actions. I think, ?I?m going to get up now,? and when I do a moment later, I credit that feeling with having been the instigating cause. But as we all know, correlation does not equal causation.

When neurologists make patients? limbs jerk by electrically zapping certain regions of their brains, the patients often insist they meant to move that arm, and they even invent reasons why. Neurologists call these erroneous, post hoc explanations ?confabulations,? but Wegner prefers the catchier ?intention inventions.? He suggests that whenever we explain our acts as the outcome of our conscious choice, we are engaging in intention invention, because our actions actually stem from countless causes of which we are completely unaware.

He cites experiments by psychologist Benjamin Libet in which subjects pushed a button whenever they chose while noting the time of their decision as displayed on a clock. The subjects took 0.2 seconds on average to push the button after they decided to do so. But an electroencephalograph monitoring their brain waves revealed that the subjects? brains generated a spike of brain activity 0.3 seconds before they decided to push the button. The meaning of these widely debated findings, Wegner says, is that our conscious willing is an afterthought, which ?kicks in at some point after the brain has already started preparing for the action.?

Other research has indicated that the neural circuits underlying our conscious sensations of intention are distinct from the circuits that actually make our muscles move. This disconnect may explain why we so often fail to carry out our most adamant decisions. This morning, I may resolve to drink only one cup of coffee instead of two, or to take a long run through the woods. But I may do neither of these things (and chances are I won?t).

Sometimes our intentions seem to be self-thwarting. The more I tell myself to go back to sleep instead of obsessing over free will, the wider awake I feel. Wegner attributes these situations to ?ironic processes of mental control.? I prefer Edgar Allan Poe?s phrase ?the imp of the perverse,? which more vividly evokes that mischievous ?other? we sense lurking within us.

Brain disorders can exacerbate experiences of this kind. Schizophrenics perceive their very thoughts as coming from malevolent external sources. Those who have lasting damage to the corpus callosum, a neural cable that transmits signals between the brain?s hemispheres, may be afflicted with alien-hand syndrome. They may end up, Wegner says, like Dr. Strangelove, whose left hand frantically tried to keep his right from jutting out in Nazi salutes.

Perfectly healthy people may lose their sense of control over actions their brains have clearly initiated. When we are hypnotized, playing with Ouija boards, or speaking in tongues, we may feel as though someone or something else is acting through us, whether a muse, ghost, devil, or deity. What all these examples imply is that the concept of a unified self, which is a necessary precondition for free will, may be an illusion.

Wegner quotes Arthur C. Clarke?s remark that ?any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.? Because we cannot possibly understand how the fantastically complex machines in our skulls really work, Wegner says, we explain our behavior in terms of such silly, occult concepts as ?the self? and ?free will.? Our belief in our personal identity and self-control does have its uses, Wegner grants; without it, ?we might soon be wearing each other?s underclothing.?

Maybe I should lighten up and embrace my lack of free will and a self. That?s what Susan Blackmore, a British psychologist and a practitioner of Zen, advises. In her book The Meme Machine (Oxford University Press, 1999), she contends that our minds are really just bundles of memes, the beliefs and habits and predilections that we catch from one another like viruses. Take all of the memes out of a mind, and there is no self left to be free.

Once you realize you have no control over your destiny, says Blackmore, you will expend less energy regretting past decisions and fretting over future ones, and you will be more appreciative of the vital present. Be here now, and so on. In other words, true freedom comes from accepting there is no freedom.

Blackmore?s reasoning strikes me as less spiritual than Orwellian. To me, choices, freely made, are what make life meaningful. Moreover, our faith in free will has social value. It provides us with the metaphysical justification for ethics and morality. It forces us to take responsibility for ourselves rather than consigning our fate to our genes or God. Free will works better than any other single criterion for gauging the vitality of a life, or a society.

Theologians have proposed that science still allows faith in a ?God of the gaps,? who dwells within those shadowy realms into which science has not fully penetrated, such as the imaginary time before the Big Bang banged. In the same way, maybe we can have a free will of the gaps. No science is more riddled with gaps, after all, than the science of human consciousness.

As I lay in bed this morning, however, my faith in free will wavered. Scanning my mind for something resembling will, I found a welter of roiling thoughts and anti-thoughts, a few of which transcended virtuality long enough for closer inspection. One thought was that, no matter what my intellect decides, I?m compelled to believe in free will.

Abruptly my body, no doubt bored with all this pointless cogitation, slipped out of bed, padded to the door, and closed it behind me.

The five-day losing streak for the Dow Jones industrial average was the longest since July.

The Dow dropped 158.20 points, or 1.2 percent, to 12,938.11 points, with losses accelerating in the last 20 minutes of trading as reports circulated that President Barack Obama would not be making a new budget proposal in a meeting with congressional leaders.

The Standard & Poor 500 index fell 15.67 points, or 1.1 percent, to 1,402.43, its longest losing streak in three months, and the Nasdaq dropped 25.59 points, or 0.9 percent, to 2,960.31.

"The reality, late in the day, is that a deal is just not going to get done," said Ryan Detrick, a senior technical strategist at Schaeffer Investment Research. "We could be greeted by a big sell-off at the start of January."

President Barack Obama returned from a Christmas break in Hawaii to meet with congressional leaders at the White House to try thrash out the terms of a deal that would prevent across-the-board tax increases for millions of Americans as well as simultaneous government spending cuts beginning Jan. 1. Those measures, if implemented, could push the economy back into recession, economists say.

Stocks?closed lower Thursday but erased most of an early loss after Republicans said they would reconvene the House of Representatives Sunday in hopes of piecing together a last-minute budget deal.

Traders have been focusing on Washington, and the budget negotiations, since the Nov. 6 presidential election returned a divided government to power.

"I can't wait till this is done, so we can start talking about markets again and not just about politics," said Doug Cote, chief market strategist at ING Investment Management. Cote doesn't expect lawmakers will manage to reach a deal before the deadline and says that when people assess the extent of tax increases on the way, "the market is going reel."

Cote also expects slowing earnings growth to hit?stocks.

Despite the fiscal gridlock in Washington, major?stock?indexes are holding on to gains for the year. The Dow is up 5.9 percent, the S&P 500 index is 11.5 percent higher and the Nasdaq is up 13.6 percent.

Stocks?rose in 2012 on optimism that a housing market recovery, coupled with an improving job market, will support economic growth. The Federal Reserve has also extended its bond purchasing program, which is intended to lower borrowing costs and encourage spending and investment.

Stocks?declined despite reports that suggested the outlook for the economy is improving.

A measure of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes increased last month to its highest level in two and a half years, the latest sign of improvement in the once-battered housing market. The National Association of Realtors said Friday that its seasonally adjusted pending home sales index rose to its highest since April 2010.

The Institute of Supply Management's Chicago-area purchasing managers index for December came in at 51.6, beating estimates for a gain to 51.

Bond prices rose as investors moved money into defensive investments. The yield on the benchmark rise 10-year Treasury note, which falls when bond prices rise, dropped to 1.70 percent from 1.75 percent late Thursday.

    Among?stocks?making moves:

Hewlett-Packard fell 36 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $13.68 after the computer and printer maker said the Department of Justice is investigating H-P's business software unit Autonomy. H-P bought Autonomy for $10 billion in 2011 and has accused the company's former management of fudging its accounting before the acquisition. H-P has lost almost half its market value this year, making it the biggest decliner among the 30stocks?in the Dow average.

Barnes and Noble rose 62 cents, or 4.3 percent, to $14.97 after the U.K. publishing and education company Pearson said it is making an $89.5 million investment in the company's Nook Media division, as the two companies look to make a bigger digital push into the education sector.

The best food books of the year 2012 | Life and style | guardian.co.uk

    Pasta

A book about pasta was Catherine's choice for the most beautiful food book of the year. Photograph: Linda Nylind for the Guardian

Jamie Oliver has done it again. For the second year running, his latest book, 15-Minute Meals, is occupying the No 1 slot on Amazon's best-selling list. He and the other big names in food (Nigel Slater is a few spots down) are helping cookery books outsell every other genre. Of course, all the best-selling food books are backed up by TV, but this doesn't stop them being good ? I still rate just about everything brought out by the River Cottage empire (this year, Three Good Things) and I'm delighted that the gloriously stylish, eclectic Jerusalem also makes Amazon's top 15.

Baking books also dominate. This year I liked those with focus. Richard Bertinet's Pastry is pure masterclass, which offers much to those with baking experience. Gaitri Pagrach-Chandra's Sugar and Spice is as much about confectionery as baking and is a must for anyone who loves marzipan. I have also baked my way through Signe Johansen's Scandilicious Baking, which includes all those warmly spiced breads and pastries you would expect, but has plenty more for those without a sweet tooth.

The art of preserving food is really capturing everyone's imagination ? to the extent that it could become the new baking. Easily my favourite book of the year is Diana Henry's Salt, Sugar, Smoke. It is not definitive or the most knowledgeable on preserving basics, but it is absolutely the most inspiring. I love the personal way in which it is written and the broad sweep of recipes, which show how each food culture puts a unique stamp on some fairly universal types of preserving. This book was years in the writing, and it shows.

I have no problem with Nigella Lawson's glamorous interpretation of Italian food, but I also want books on the Mediterranean with more authenticity. Claudia Roden's The Food of Spain is immaculately researched; the food is given proper cultural and historical context and the recipes are terrific. There is some overlap between it and Caroline Conran's similarly thoughtful Sud de France on the food of Languedoc, but both are worth buying. Sticking with southern Europe, I loved Polpo, but for something completely different, look at Maddalena Caruso's Love Italian Food. Caruso is ebullient and unashamedly unsubtle in her flavour combinations, and pulls it off ? just. Finally, the most beautiful book of the year is for me The Art of Pasta, which also has some excellent pasta recipes as well as making me yearn for beechwood corzetti stamps, clearly designed for the cook who has everything.

Moving vaguely south-eastwards, Kaushy Patel's book on vegetarian Indian cooking is worth it for the flatbreads alone and I found myself cooking frequently from Fuchsia Dunlop's Every Grain of Rice. The commentary is fascinating and the recipes are simple, well-balanced and accessible. The same can be said for the pared-down recipes in Peter Gordon's Everyday. Flashes of trademark fusion sit with more personal dishes from his New Zealand childhood. It even had me enjoying tinned spaghetti for the first time in 25 years, thanks to some moreish white bread tartlets.

Tinned spaghetti was a childhood treat in our household, but mince was a staple. Josceline Dimbleby's Marvellous Meals with Mince is updated and extended from her original 1980s book for Sainsbury's but is still filled with dishes you will remember with nostalgia. We all (kids included) loved the blue cheese meatloaf, the piglet pie and the Atlas Mountain Soup.

Of the non-recipe food books, two stand out. Dorothy Hartley's Lost World is a chatty, pre-war Rural Rides full of minutiae. Bee Wilson's Consider the Fork traces a history of how we eat food via the implements we use to cook it. It's beautifully written and researched with interesting analysis ? I love the section on measurements and a particular paragraph on the ways in which we make our morning coffee. Both of these books made me commit that cardinal sin of reading out passages to my ever-patient partner, just because I had to share.

    Have I missed any gems?

iPad App Video Review: Anomaly Korea

The tower offense pioneers over at 11 Bit Studios finally released the sequel to their smash hit, Anomaly Warzone Earth. They branched out a bit, releasing the amusing Funky Smugglers and the dreamlike puzzler, Sleepwalker's Journey, but now they're back, and as this game will remind you a few times, Baghdad was just the beginning. The battle against a mysterious alien tower menace continues with new visuals, units, modes, and an awesome but sometimes hilarious Korean undertone.

The core game here is still the same, with you planning convoy routes through enemy infested streets, able to change your route on the fly. You technically continue to play as the invisible but ever-present commando unit, with your various power-ups, such as smoke screen, repair field, and others, activating and placing them with a simple tap or two. New units like the Horangi tank join your ranks, with unique unit abilities, like the aforementioned tank's area of effect blast. As you make your way through the world, you'll collect resources and upgrade units as well.

It's not just new unit and enemy types mixing things up. For example, there are now artillery zones that will automatically be targeted and be fired upon as you pass through them, but only after a short countdown. Subtle additions like this are quite elegant, adding more dimensions of strategy without changing anything from previous games. Another great new addition is the Art of War trials. As you play and do well, you'll unlock these brief but brutal challenges, and they are very satisfying to complete.

The visuals have received an upgrade, as has the voice acting. Still, there's something kind of funny about all the Korean accented English speaking, along with the still excellent Asian-styled soundtrack. It's not bad at all, but can feel out of place at first. All in all, Anomaly Korea offers more of the same, but improved, building upon the last game in all the right ways. You don't even need to have played the first game to enjoy this one, so go ahead and download it for the current price of three dollars. I can't wait to see where in the world this anomaly pops up next.

    Stallone

Stallone here! I?m not as tough as my name implies ? actually, I?m really just a big love bug.

I came into the shelter as a stray and wasn?t feeling well, but now that I?m on my special grain-free diet, I?m like a new man and I feel great! I will have to continue this diet for the rest of my life, but don?t worry, it?s really not complicated and just means getting me a certain kind of kitty food.

At 3 years old, I?m very playful and love to bat toy mice around. Since I?m such an easy-going and affectionate kitty I will make a really great family pet and can even live with other cat friends!

Come in and meet me soon, you may even get to hear my funny ?meow? for attention. And don?t forget, all new adopters receive a free first Vet visit to your choice of 16 area vets.

    Camellia

Hi everyone, I?m Camellia, a 1-year-old, energetic girl who is looking for someone who wants to have fun, fun, fun! I came in to the shelter because I needed some specialized training when it came to going potty outdoors (embarrassing, I know). The staff here has worked really hard with me, and I?ve learned to go to the bathroom outside on my walks. I?ll still need to work on my training and it would be helpful if I wasn?t left alone for too long while I?m mastering this. I love attention and will roll over to show you my belly! Sometimes I don?t know my own strength when playing, so I need to be in a home without young children. If you?re an experienced dog owner looking for a pup to work and play with, then come meet me! Like all the pets at HSFN I am spayed, micro-chipped and up to date on all vaccines.

    To adopt these pets

The Humane Society for Greater Nashua is at 24 Ferry Road, Nashua. For more information, visit www.hsfn.org, 889-2275 or e-mail hsfn@hsfn.org. Sponsor a pet. For $30 a month, you can ensure that one animal in the shelter receives proper nutrition and a safe place to live. For $40 a month, you can ensure that one animal receives proper nutrition and a safe place to live including a warm bed, toys, medical care and a microchip.

Looking for a way to help out?

These are the top five most wanted items at the shelter this week: paper towels, size large latex or non-latex gloves, IAMS canned Kitten Food, IAMS Adult Dog Food and IAMS Adult Cat Food. Donations can be dropped off 24/7 in our donation shed.

Husband charged in killing of Wisconsin officer

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? An Iraq War veteran told detectives that he stalked his wife for several days while she was patrolling the streets of the Milwaukee suburb where she was a police officer, then ambushed her in the early hours of Christmas Eve and killed her, according to prosecutors.

Ben Gabriel Sebena, 30, was charged Thursday with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of his wife, Jennifer Sebena, who was found dead in front of Wauwatosa's fire station by her fellow officers before dawn on Monday. She had been shot five times in the head.

Ben Sebena made an initial court appearance Thursday, and a court commissioner ordered the decorated Marine Corps veteran held on $1 million cash bond. Sebena wasn't required to enter a plea, and his attorney, Michael Steinle, didn't immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment.

Authorities say officers went to check on Jennifer Sebena when she didn't respond to radio calls. She joined the police force two years ago and had been patrolling alone on the night she was killed.

"She was everything I could hope for in a young police officer: intelligent, energetic, willing to be of service and wanting to be a great police officer," Wauwatosa police Chief Barry Weber said at a news conference.

Investigators said they found a number of details tying Ben Sebena to the killing. Surveillance video showed a vehicle that matches his in the area around the time of the shooting, and detectives who searched the couple's home found a gun in the attic that fires ammunition matching the bullet casings found at the scene. They also found Jennifer Sebena's service weapon hidden in the attic.

The investigation began when Ben Sebena called police Monday about 6:30 a.m. asking them to check on his wife's well-being. A police sergeant called him back five minutes later telling him to come to the station because his wife had been involved in an incident.

Ben Sebena didn't ask what happened, the complaint said. Later, when he was told at the station that his wife had been killed, he still didn't ask what happened to her.

During the interview, Ben Sebena "stated that he had been jealous of other men with regards to his wife," the complaint said.

Less than three weeks before she died, Jennifer Sebena told a colleague that her husband had acted violently toward her and put a gun to her head, prosecutors said.

The police chief said he wasn't aware of issues that would have been a cause for concern for Jennifer Sebena's safety.

The state Justice Department is assisting in the investigation. Dave Spakowicz, the director of the department's criminal-investigation operations, said authorities are not speculating on a motive.

While at the police station, officers used video equipment to monitor Ben Sebena as he sat in an empty room. A detective heard him talking to himself, saying something to the effect that his wife had been helping him, adding, "How could I do that to her."

Ben Sebena told investigators he had been stalking his wife for a few days. He said he waited a few hours near the fire department where officers often take breaks, and when he saw her squad car he opened fire. He said she reached for her weapon and he took it from her holster, and then shot her repeatedly in the face.

"Benjamin Sebena stated that he wanted to make sure she was dead so she wouldn't suffer," the complaint said.

Ben Sebena served two tours in Iraq with the Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged in 2005 after suffering severe arm and leg injuries in a mortar attack that year. Among the 10 medals or commendations he was awarded were a Purple Heart, a Good Conduct medal and a rifle expert badge.

In a 10-minute video for his church made in 2010, Ben Sebena describes his transformation into a decorated war veteran rediscovered a love of God.

"Before I went in I was pretty much a hippie. I was very laid back but the anger was there ? it was just very hidden," he said.

He said he joined the military because he felt unloved and unimportant, and that the Marines helped him centralize the anger, but that the rage persisted even when he returned to the U.S. He said he would ignore red lights and tear down the freeway on his motorcycle at 150 mph.

He also discussed his blossoming relationship with Jennifer, whom he knew from high school and with whom he exchanged emails during his recovery.

"Our love flourished. We became actually infatuated with each other," he said in the video for Elmbrook Church in nearby Brookfield. The church's pastor, Scott Arbeiter, confirmed to The Associated Press that it was Ben Sebena in the video.

Jennifer Sebena's funeral is scheduled for Saturday.

The Perils of Subzero Weather for Pets | Stafford Animal Shelter

When the temperature dips below zero, rules change for pets? outdoor time.? There are a number of important seasonal changes for you to be aware of.
??When it?s below zero, keep your cat inside, they can freeze or become lost. Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.
??When it?s cold, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars. When the motor is started, the cat can be injured or killed by the fan belt. If there are outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the car hood before starting the engine to give the cat a chance to escape.
??Don?t let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm?dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure yours always wears ID tags.
??Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol.
??You should also thoroughly wipe off your cat and dog?s legs and stomach when they come in out of the sleet, snow or ice. They can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking their paws, and the paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice. You can put petroleum jelly on dry, cracked paw pads to help them heal.
??Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. For ?outdoor? dogs, they need to have insulated places with warm, dry bedding; plastic dog houses do not keep the cold out.
??It only takes three hours for an animal to freeze to death without shelter, even if they have blankets. If you have barn cats, they must have a warm sheltered place to escape the cold, like protected burrows in haystacks. Check water several times a day since it often freezes outdoors and they can?t get enough moisture from eating snow. There are also plug in pet bowls and heated bedding available.
??It is unlawful to leave a dog or cat outdoors without adequately warm shelter and defrosted water. There will be a first warning and after that you can be charged with animal cruelty and fined $1,000 with imprisonment possible for subsequent convictions. If an animal?s life is endangered they can be seized as well.
??Arctic Circle breeds do well as outside dogs, but do not put a puppy or adult dog outside for extended periods of time. If your pet has been outside for any length of time during very cold weather, watch closely for frost bit paw symptoms such as picking up their feet, whining, and limping.
??Puppies and smaller dogs ? a larger percentage of their body mass is exposed so they get cold easier ? do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs, so may not be willing to do their business when it is very cold and you may want to have paper-lined areas indoors if your dog has been paper trained. Older dogs also get cold easier so winter coats for elders, pups and small dogs are recommended.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese authorities have confiscated televisions from 300 monasteries in a heavily Tibetan part of the west of the country and dismantled satellite equipment that broadcast "anti-China" programs, prompted by Tibetan self-immolations in the region.

Some 94 Tibetans, including 81 this year, have set themselves on fire in protest against Chinese rule. Five self-immolations occurred in Tibetan-dominated Huangnan prefecture in Qinghai province, the state-run Qinghai news agency said on Thursday.

The government in Huangnan said its approach in tackling self-immolations comprised of "guiding public opinion on the Dalai issue", increasing patrols and "blocking outside harmful information", according to the news agency, which is managed by the Qinghai government.

"At this critical moment for maintaining social stability in Huangnan prefecture ... (we must) strengthen measures and fully fight the special battle against self-immolations," the article said.

"We do not know anything about it," an official from the Huangnan prefecture government told Reuters by telephone, when asked to confirm the report, before hanging up.

Beijing considers Nobel peace laureate the Dalai Lama, who fled China in 1959 after an abortive uprising against Chinese rule, a separatist. The Dalai Lama says he is merely seeking greater autonomy for his Himalayan homeland.

The article said the prefecture's agricultural and pastoral areas had relied on certain satellite equipment "to watch and listen to overseas, anti-China programs".

The local government would invest 8.64 million yuan ($1.39 million) to install 50 transmitters that would broadcast 70 percent of the prefecture's television channels, the report said.

China has repeatedly denounced the Dalai Lama and exiled Tibetan groups for fomenting the self-immolations.

The United States and several other countries have called on China to end repressive policies and to negotiate with the Dalai Lama.

Beijing has defended its iron-fisted rule in Tibet, saying the remote region suffered from dire poverty, brutal exploitation of serfs and economic stagnation until 1950 when Communist troops "peacefully liberated" it.

Time runs short to avert longshoremen's strike

NEW YORK (AP) ? In just a few days, a walkout by thousands of dock workers could bring commerce to a near standstill at every major port from Boston to Houston, potentially delivering a big blow to retailers and manufacturers still struggling to find their footing in a weak economy.

More than 14,000 longshoremen are threating to go on strike Sunday ? a wide-ranging work stoppage that would immediately close cargo ports on the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico to container ships.

The 15 ports involved in the labor dispute move more than 100 million tons of goods each year, or about 40 percent of the nation's containerized cargo traffic. Losing them to a shutdown, even for a few days, could cost the economy billions of dollars.

"If the port shuts down, nothing moves in or out," said Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation. And when the workers do return, "it's going to take time to clear out that backlog, and we don't know how long that it's going to take."

Shipments of such varied products as flat-screen TVs, sneakers and snow shovels would either sit idle at sea or get rerouted, at great time and expense. U.S. factories also rely on container ships for parts and raw materials, meaning supply lines for all sorts of products could be squeezed.

Joseph Ahlstrom, a professor at the State University of New York's Maritime College and a former cargo ship captain, called container ships the "lifeblood of the country."

"We don't fly in a lot of products. It's just too expensive," Ahlstrom said. "The bulk of the products we import come in inside containers."

The master contract between the International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, a group representing shipping lines, terminal operators and port associations, expired in September. The two sides agreed to extend it once already, for 90 days, but they have so far balked at extending it again when it expires at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

The union said its members would agree to an extension only if the Maritime Alliance dropped a proposal to freeze the royalties workers get for every container they unload. The Alliance has argued that the longshoremen, who it said earn an average $124,138 per year in wages and benefits, are compensated well enough already.

Federal mediators have been trying to push negotiations along, but there has been no word from either side on the progress of the talks since Dec. 24. As recently as Dec. 19, the president of the longshoremen, Harold Daggett, said the talks weren't going well and that a strike was expected.

The work stoppage would not be absolute. Longshoremen would continue to handle military cargo, mail, passenger ships, non-containerized items like automobiles, and perishable commodities, like fresh food.

Yet the economic damage could still be severe.

"The global economy moves by water, and shutting down container ports along the East and Gulf coasts while the national economy remains fragile benefits no one," Deborah Hadden, acting port director at Massport, the public agency that oversees shipping terminals in Boston. It is not a part of the contract dispute.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said "the livelihood of thousands of Florida families lies in the balance."

The White House weighed in, too, urging dockworkers and shipping companies Thursday to reach agreement "as quickly as possible" on a contract extension. Obama spokesman Matt Lehrich said the administration is monitoring the situation closely.

If it happens, the walkout could be the biggest national port disruption since 2002, when unionized dockworkers were locked out of 29 West Coast ports for 10 days because of a contract dispute.

The ports only reopened after President George W. Bush, invoking powers given to him by the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, ordered an 80-day cooling-off period. Some economists estimated that each day of that lockout cost the U.S. economy $1 billion. It took months for the retail supply chain to fully recover.

An East Coast port freeze would have its biggest impact at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where 3,250 longshoremen handled 32.3 million tons of cargo in 2010. The authority is not a party to the contract dispute.

Other major ports affected would include Savannah, Ga., which handled 18 million tons, and Houston and Hampton Roads, Va., which each handled more than 12.5 million tons.

Thousands of other jobs would be directly affected by the shutdown. Truck drivers might not have any cargo to transport, tug boat captains no ships to guide and freight train operators nothing to haul.

Simultaneously, another labor dispute involving dock workers was playing out on the West Coast.

Longshoremen at several Pacific Northwest grain terminals worked Thursday under contract terms they soundly rejected last weekend. The owners implemented the terms after declaring talks at an impasse. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union has yet to announce its next move.

Workplace rules, not salary and benefits, have been the obstacle to a new deal.

The dispute involves terminals in Portland, Ore., Vancouver, Wash., and Seattle, where longshoremen have been working without an agreement since the last contract expired Sept. 30.
