Builders bulldoze big Mayan pyramid in Belize

BELIZE CITY (AP) ? A construction company has essentially destroyed one of Belize's largest Mayan pyramids with backhoes and bulldozers to extract crushed rock for a road-building project, authorities announced on Monday.

The head of the Belize Institute of Archaeology, Jaime Awe, said the destruction at the Nohmul complex in northern Belize was detected late last week. The ceremonial center dates back at least 2,300 years and is the most important site in northern Belize, near the border with Mexico.

"It's a feeling of Incredible disbelief because of the ignorance and the insensitivity ... they were using this for road fill," Awe said. "It's like being punched in the stomach, it's just so horrendous."

Nohmul sat in the middle of a privately owned sugar cane field, and lacked the even stone sides frequently seen in reconstructed or better-preserved pyramids. But Awe said the builders could not possibly have mistaken the pyramid mound, which is about 100 feet tall, for a natural hill because the ruins were well-known and the landscape there is naturally flat.

"These guys knew that this was an ancient structure. It's just bloody laziness", Awe said.

Photos from the scene showed backhoes clawing away at the pyramid's sloping sides, leaving an isolated core of limestone cobbles at the center, with what appears to be a narrow Mayan chamber dangling above one clawed-out section.

"Just to realize that the ancient Maya acquired all this building material to erect these buildings, using nothing more than stone tools and quarried the stone, and carried this material on their heads, using tump lines," said Awe. "To think that today we have modern equipment, that you can go and excavate in a quarry anywhere, but that this company would completely disregard that and completely destroyed this building. Why can't these people just go and quarry somewhere that has no cultural significance? It's mind-boggling."

Belizean police said they are conducting an investigation and criminal charges are possible. The Nohmul complex sits on private land, but Belizean law says that any pre-Hispanic ruins are under government protection.

The Belize community-action group Citizens Organized for Liberty Through Action called the destruction of the archaeological site "an obscene example of disrespect for the environment and history."

It is not the first time it's happened in Belize, a country of about 350,000 people that is largely covered in jungle and dotted with hundreds of Mayan ruin sites, though few as large as Nohmul.

Norman Hammond, an emeritus professor of archaeology at Boston University who worked in Belizean research projects in the 1980s, wrote in an email that "bulldozing Maya mounds for road fill is an endemic problem in Belize (the whole of the San Estevan center has gone, both of the major pyramids at Louisville, other structures at Nohmul, many smaller sites), but this sounds like the biggest yet."

Arlen Chase, chairman of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Central Florida, said, "Archaeologists are disturbed when such things occur, but there is only a very limited infrastructure in Belize that can be applied to cultural heritage management."

"Unfortunately, they (destruction of sites) are all too common, but not usually in the center of a large Maya site," Chase wrote.

He said there had probably still been much to learn from the site. "A great deal of archaeology was undertaken at Nohmul in the '70s and '80s, but this only sampled a small part of this large center."

Belize isn't the only place where the handiwork of the far-flung and enormously prolific Maya builders is being destroyed. The ancient Mayas spread across southeastern Mexico and through Guatemala, Honduras and Belize.

"I don't think I am exaggerating if I say that every day a Maya mound is being destroyed for construction in one of the countries where the Maya lived," wrote Francisco Estrada-Belli, a professor at Tulane University's Anthropology Department.

"Unfortunately, this destruction of our heritage is irreversible but many don't take it seriously," he added. "The only way to stop it is by showing that it is a major crime and people can and will go to jail for it."

Robert Rosenswig, an archaeologist at the State University of New York at Albany, described the difficult and heartbreaking work of trying to salvage information at the nearby site of San Estevan following similar destruction around 2005.

"Bulldozing damage at San Estevan is extensive and the site is littered with Classic period potsherds," he wrote in an academic paper describing the scene. "We spent a number of days at the beginning of the 2005 season trying to figure out the extent of the damage .... after scratching our heads for many days, a bulldozer showed up and we realized that what appear to be mounds, when overgrown with chest-high vegetation, are actually recently bulldozed garbage piles."

However small the compensation, bulldozing pyramids is one very brutal way of revealing the inner cores of the structures, which were often built up in periodic stages of construction.

"The one advantage of this massive destruction, to the core site, is that the remains of early domestic activity are now visible on the surface," Rosenswig wrote.

Sony's Got A 13.3-Inch E-Reader With Pen Input, Which Is Sort Of Like A Dodo With Antlers

8ido1800000hllyvI've heard some suggestions that our extreme fascination with Google Glass is more a symptom of desperation for some kind of genuine gadget innovation than anything to do with the product's merits, and a new gadget from Sony (via The Verge) has me wondering whether or not other companies are flailing about for something novel. Sony introduced a new 13.3-inch e-ink prototype reader device today, which seems new but also remarkably old and washed up all at once.

A 16-year-old cancer victim who pleaded with teenagers to resist suicidal tendencies has died at his Kerry home.

Donal Walsh touched the hearts of the Irish nation with his heartfelt plea to those considering suicide to think otherwise.

The talented rugby player from near Tralee was diagnosed with a tumour in his leg four years ago.
As suicide numbers rise in Ireland, he publicly criticised those who ?choose? to take their own lives as he battled the fatal disease.

Sadly, Donal died on Sunday night at his family home, surrounded by dad Fionnbar, mum Elma and sister Jema.

The Irish Times reports that he was selected for a Kerry ?local hero? award last March when he stated that he ?angered by suicide among teenagers?.

After a recent diagnosis, Donal said: ?I realised that I was fighting for my life for the third time in four years and this time I have no hope.

?Yet still I hear of young people committing suicide and I?m sorry but it makes me feel nothing but anger. I feel angry that these people choose to take their lives, to ruin their families and to leave behind a mess that no one can clean up.?

The teenager pleaded, ?Please, as a 16-year-old who has no say in his death sentence, who has no choice in the pain he is about to cause and who would take any chance at even a few more months on this planet: appreciate what you have, know that there are always other options and help is always there.?

Walsh also raised funds to improve conditions for young cancer victims at Our Lady?s Hospital in Crumlin where he received numerous bouts of chemotherapy and other treatments. He raised over $70,000 for the hospital.

The Irish Times says that he had a strong faith and did not have a sense of anger or unfairness about his condition but he did worry about the effect his death would have on his family.

He said: ?I never get scared. It?s nothing to do with the illness or dying that scares me. It does worry me to think what my family will be like afterwards.?

The report adds that Ireland?s National Office for Suicide Prevention had been working with the teenager and his family to see how his appeal to young people against suicide might be utilised further.

Dennis Rodman has some fighting words for President Obama, who he says has failed in his foreign policy toward North Korean and its leader Kim Jong-Un.

"We got a black president who can't even go talk to him," Rodman told celebrity website TMZ.com. "How about that one?"

Rodman announced his plans to visit North Korea on Aug. 1 and he's got a self-imposed mission.

He wants to secure the release of 44-year-old Korean American Kenneth Bae, who was recently sentenced to 15 years hard labor.

The former NBA player said he's going because he feels the White House has failed with its North Korea policy.

Earlier this year, Rodman visited North Korea and even spent time with the North Korean leader. The two bonded over their love of basketball.

Last week, Rodman tweeted this message to Kim Jong-Un: "?do me a solid and cut Ken Bae loose."

U.S. officials told ABC News that they are in touch with Bae's family.

The U.S. government is calling on the North Korean government to grant him amnesty.

The news of Rodman's trip comes as North Korea has been dialing back talk of war.

"At least Kim did one thing, he took the missiles back," Rodman said. "Thank you. Took the missiles back, right?"

Muslim, Christian groups clash in NY libel suit

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? A Muslim group is accusing a Christian organization of defamation for publishing a book that accuses the Muslim collective of holding terrorist training in its enclaves.

The Christian Action Network refuses to back down, challenging Muslims of America Inc. to prove the allegations wrong in an upstate New York court.

The Muslim group has a community in Hancock, near Binghamton, N.Y., and others around the U.S. It calls the network's accusations deliberate and damaging lies.

Attorney Tahirah Amatul-Wadud said the Muslim group is seeking retractions and $18 million in damages, and a halt to further publication of network founder Martin Mawyer's 2012 book, "Twilight in America: the Untold Story of Terrorist Training Camps Inside America."

The group's residential communities are peaceful, Amatul-Wadud said.

"The property upstate has farms; it has gardens; it has buildings for work; it has little stores," she said. "It's a community of families and of individuals who are just trying to get by day to day."

Their common denominator is their faith, she said. "Everyone believes in one God and the Prophet Mohammed as his messenger."

The Christian group has denied the defamation allegations and asked U.S. District Judge Thomas McAvoy to dismiss the complaint. It hasn't withdrawn the book and continues to promote it on its website.

"The defendants intend vigorously defend this case in order to protect their right to free speech under the First Amendment," attorney Michael Grygiel said.

The Lynchburg, Va.-based network was founded in 1990 by Mawyer, former editor of the Rev. Jerry Falwell's "Moral Majority Report."

A scheduling conference is set for May 17 in Binghamton before a magistrate. Trial is expected next year.

The book claims both state and federal authorities "turn a blind eye" to the Islamic extremists trying to convert U.S. citizens in the communities, that Muslims of America is a front for the radical group Jamaat Al Fuqras and that it has held terrorist training at the rural enclaves.

In court papers, Muslims of America said it was founded around 1985 as a New York religious corporation whose principal place of worship is Hancock, where it bought 60 acres of rural property to provide a safe haven for inner city families. It now also has communities in Georgia, Michigan, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Texas, Canada and Trinidad.

The group said that it has always counseled members and residents to abide by U.S. laws and avoid criminal, immoral and antisocial behavior. The communities include doctors, engineers, nurses, teachers, tradesmen, farmers and business people, with workshops, seminars and interfaith outreach open to the public, it has said.

Its complaint said the Christian network harassed its communities in Red House, Va., and Commerce, Ga., and that the book presents false, defamatory and therefore libelous statements as fact, not just opinion. It cited this from the book's back cover: "These Islamic extremists convert our own citizens, then teach them how to kill."

In its court response, the network cited a host of defenses, including that lawsuits aren't allowed for damage to reputation because of expressions of opinion and rhetorical hyperbole, that statements were made "within the sphere of legitimate public interest" and that the published statements weren't made with either malice or reckless disregard of probable falsity.

What to expect from your physical therapist - Cabinet.com

Reader Submitted

By CATHY LEER

Special to the Journal

(This is the last in a three-part series on How to Choose a Physical Therapist.)

Now that you have talked to a physical therapist about possibly starting a treatment program, and he or she has told you what can be done to help you achieve your medical objectives, you need to be aware of what to expect and demand from your PT.

This article covers these key expectations and the red flags to watch for as you select a physical therapist and commit to a treatment program.

What you should expect from your Physical Therapist or physical therapy clinic:

? Highly trained and experienced physical therapists.

? Specific course of treatment based upon a thorough evaluation and identification of the source of your symptoms.

? A single therapist for the duration of your course of treatment.

? Dedicated hands-on care.

? One-on-one care.

? No double-booking.

? No group sessions unless specific to your needs and billed appropriately.

? Private treatment rooms to assure your privacy as well as to assure that your PT is devoting 100 percent of his or her attention to you and your needs.

? Positive changes or results within two weeks. That doesn?t mean that you will be fully recovered by then, but you should have enough change to indicate that you are on the correct plan of care.

? Communication among your health care professionals.

? Courteous and professional care from your physical therapist as well as the entire staff.

? Appropriate transition and inclusion of home exercises to maximize outcome and effectiveness of care and carryover of benefits from treatment to treatment.

? Educated and articulate answers to your questions relative to your condition or to the suggested plan of care.

To recap, here are a few important points or ?red flags? to keep in mind:

Physicians who send you to facilities they own are profiting from the referral, and that brings up an ethical question. What are they more concerned with, their profit or your well-being?

Physicians who are employees of hospitals are generally ?encouraged? to refer to other hospital-owned departments and oftentimes suffer from negative reviews or punishments if they don?t comply (another ethical dilemma).

New graduates, assistants or trainers don?t have the experience, certification or advanced training that PTs with years or decades of experience have. They are less equipped to ascertain the source of your symptoms, which equates ineffective or longer terms of care.

Hospital-owned, outpatient facilities are often up to four times more expensive than the same services at physical therapist-owned private practices.

Not having the same therapist treatment to treatment equates inefficiency and lack of continuity of care.

Hopefully, you have been able to glean some valuable information from this article to help you make an informed decision on a very important matter: your health and well-being. The ?bottom line? for a business may be profit, but your ?bottom line? should be who can provide the best care at the best price, in the most expeditious and professional manner and achieve the best outcomes for your recovery. You have a right to choose, and the choice is yours.
