'G.I. Joe' commands No. 1 at box office with $41M

(AP) ? After a nine-month delay, "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" deployed to the top spot at the box office.

The action film starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum as the gun-toting military toys brought to life marched into the No. 1 position at the weekend box office, earning $41.2 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. "Retaliation" opened Wednesday at midnight, which helped bring its domestic total to $51.7 million.

Paramount postponed the sequel to 2009's "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra" last May from its original June opening date to convert the film to 3-D. The last-minute switcheroo came just weeks after "Battleship," another movie based on a Hasbro toy, sank at the box office. At that time, Paramount already began its advertising campaign for "Retaliation."

"It certainly vindicates the decision," said Don Harris, the studio's head of distribution. "Any time you make those sorts of moves, people always assume the worst. The truth is I'd seen this movie a long time ago in 2-D, and the movie worked in 2-D. It's not trying to be 'Schindler's List.' This movie is intended to be enjoyed as a big, action spectacle."

After debuting in the top spot last weekend, the 3-D animated prehistoric comedy "The Croods" from DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox slipped to the No. 2 spot with $26.5 million in its second weekend. The film features the voices of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone and Catherine Keener as a cave family on the hunt for a new home.

Among the other new films this weekend, "Tyler Perry's Temptation" starring Jurnee Smollett-Bell and Lance Gross opened above expectations at No. 3 with $22.3 million, while the sci-fi adaptation "The Host" featuring Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons, and Jake Abel as characters from the Stephenie Meyer novel landed at No. 6 in its debut weekend with a modest $11 million.

Overall, the weekend box office was on par with last year when "The Hunger Games" continued to dominate in its second weekend of release with $58.5 million. After a slow start, Hollywood's year-to-date revenues are still 12 percent behind last year, heading into next month when summer movie season unofficially kicks off with "Iron Man 3" on May 3.

"It's getting us back on track after many weekends of down trending box office," said Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood.com. "Last weekend was a turning point with the strength of 'The Croods' and 'Olympus Has Fallen' doing better than expected. We're heading toward the summer movie season on solid footing. It's been a tough year so far."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" $41.2 million.

2. "The Croods," $26.5 million.

3. "Tyler Perry's Temptation," $22.3 million.

4. "Olympus Has Fallen," $14 million.

5. "Oz the Great and Powerful," $11.6 million.

6. "The Host," $11 million.

7. "The Call," $4.8 million.

8. "Admission," $3.2 million.

9. "Spring Breakers," $2.7 million.

10. "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone," $1.3 million.

Mathematician publishes 2013 Major League Baseball projections

Mar. 28, 2013 ? It looks like 2013 will be a thrilling season for baseball fans as four of the six divisions can be expected to deliver tight races, says baseball guru NJIT Associate Professor and Associate Dean Bruce Bukiet. Over the years, Bukiet has applied mathematical analysis to compute the number of regular season games each Major League Baseball team should win. Though his expertise is in mathematical modeling, his projections have compared well with those of so-called experts.

The numbers indicate that only one game might separate the first and second place teams in both the National League's (NL) East and West divisions, with the Atlanta Braves (94 wins) edging out the Washington Nationals (93 wins) in the East and the Los Angeles Dodgers (88 wins) coming in just ahead of the San Francisco Giants (87 wins) in the West. Even in the NL Central, the St. Louis Cardinals (90 wins) don't have much breathing room, winning that division by a projected 3 games over the Cincinnati Reds (87 wins). The Braves, Nationals, Cards, Reds and Dodgers should make the playoffs, while the Giants miss by a single game.

It is hard to believe that in the American League (AL), the contests could be even closer. While the Detroit Tigers should have the best record in baseball (102 wins) and run away with the Central division, with the next best team (the Chicago White Sox) more than 20 wins behind, the other two divisions could end up in ties. In the AL West, Bukiet has the Anaheim Angels and the Oakland Athletics tied with 92 wins each, while in the AL East, he says there could be a 3-way tie!!! The guru predicts that the Toronto Blue Jays, the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees all will win 87 games. Such results would mean that the Tigers, Angels, and Athletics would make the playoffs, while the other two teams to make the playoffs would be from among the Blue Jays, Rays, Yankees or Texas Rangers, all whom the model show come in at 87 wins.

Bukiet makes these projections to demonstrate and promote the power of math. He wants to show young people that math can be fun, that it can be applied to improve one's understanding of many aspects of life and that if you love mathematics, it can be a great college major and lead to a satisfying career.

Bukiet bases his predictions on a mathematical model he developed in 2000. He has made revisions over the years. His results have led to back-to-back wins for himself in 2010-2011 as predictions champ at baseballphd.net.

Bukiet should have plenty of time this summer to spend doing math since once again his favorite team, the New York Mets, should win the same number of games (74) as they did last year. Once again they should come in fourth in their division, while the Miami Marlins have the worst record in the NL with 59 wins. The worst team overall should be the Houston Astros in their debut in the AL with only 56 successful outcomes and 106 losses. Yes, and once again, for the 21th year in a row, the Pittsburgh Pirates should finish with a losing record.

Pregnant Birmingham woman, convicted of reckless manslaughter, to

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- A pregnant Birmingham woman, who began serving time late last year at Alabama's state prison for women for her conviction in the 2011 death of a Gardendale man she had struck with her car just after she had shot up with cocaine, was released today by a Jefferson County judge so she can have her baby.

The family of the Gardendale man was upset with Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Teresa Pulliam's decision to allow Jessica Branham, 25, to remain out of prison for at least four months to have the baby. The judge ordered Branham to return to court Aug. 2 to determine whether she has to serve the remainder of her sentence.

"I feel that my family has not received justice for my dad. Ms. Branham has made a mockery of my father, family, and of the court system," Christine Morrow, daughter of Randy Colburn, stated in an email after court this morning.

The prosecutor in the case, Mara Russell, said she understands the family's disappointment of how Branham has been able to "dodge" her sentence so far.

"Upon her conviction, the Judge told this defendant she would be sentenced to prison, yet, she came to the sentencing hearing and announced she was pregnant," Russell said." She was allowed even more time to remain out before beginning the service of her sentence. While remaining out and after she announced she was pregnant, she continued to test positive for drugs."

"Now, after serving a few months, she is once again being released," Russell said. "We hope that she will eventually serve her entire original sentence of 10 years split three years to serve."

Pulliam had revoked her bond in November _ after her sentencing _ when Branham tested positive for drugs. Because of that, the judge immediately ordered her to prison earlier than the original Dec. 28 report date. Branham then lost an appeal to the Alabama Criminal Court of Appeals to be released on bond while she waited on an appeal.

Branham's attorney, Richard Sandefer, said she is being placed on community corrections under strict house arrest with electronic monitoring. "She can't even go out on the front porch," he said.

The only time Branham will be allowed out of the house is to go to the doctor, hospital, and church, Sandefer said.

Sandefer said he was proud of Pulliam for her decision in the face of immense pressure. "She did an exceptional job ... I think she did what was the compassionate thing," he said.

Sandefer questioned the reaction to Pulliam's ruling because the judge had already indicated at the sentencing hearing what she was planning to do.

Branham's due date is in the next two weeks, Sandefer said. Branham's mother will be adopting the baby in order to keep the baby in the family with the uncertainty over her daughter's sentence, he said.

Branham was convicted by a jury in September of reckless manslaughter in the death of Colburn on Aug. 13, 2011 in the parking lot in front of CiCi's Pizza on Center Point Parkway. He was run over by Branham's sports utility vehicle. He had just left the restaurant and was crossing the parking lot with his fiance and 18-year-old son when he was struck.

Branham had been in her car shooting up cocaine, had a seizure, and lost control of her car before striking Colburn.

Pulliam in November gave Branham a split 10-year sentence , but to serve three years in prison, followed by five years on probation. If she violates her probation then she would have to serve the remainder of the 10-year sentence.

In her original sentencing order, Pulliam had stated that after proof from medical records and doctors that Branham had reached 8 months pregnancy she would consider allowing Branham to be released to deliver the baby "at private expense. The judge had said she didn't want Branham to have her baby in Tutwiler.

According to her order issued this afternoon Pulliam stated she had brought Branham back into court today after a review of her medical records.

Besides house arrest, Branham also will have to undergo weekly drug testing, Pulliam stated in her order.

At the time of the August hearing, Pulliam states in today's order, that she will determine then whether her original sentence imposed will be put into effect or whether Branham will be continued on community corrections followed by a term of probation.

Morrow and other family members are angry that Branham had been able to get out on bond before her sentencing despite testing positive for drugs.

Colburn's son, Lee George, said that every time the family has gone to court for a hearing on Branham she has walked free. "She gets to go home to her family and I don't get to home to my dad," he said.

Morrow said she was also upset that Branham was given four months to have the baby.

Morrow said she had told her father that she was pregnant with her daughter on the morning of the day he died. Her daughter is now 11 months old.

"Well my dad didn't get four months with my daughter!," Morrow wrote. "On the other hand, women don't even get four months maternity leave."

"She (Branham) didn't care about her child not to fail a drug test so what makes anyone think she is going to care for the child when she gets here," Morrow said.

Colburn's fianc?, Tamela Lowery, said she believes the judge has been too lenient on Branham. "I think that's unfair," she said.

Flood Insurance Rates Expected To Rise | WNEP.com

Posted on: 6:12 pm, March 28, 2013, by Bill Wadell, updated on: 06:26pm, March 28, 2013

WEST PITTSTON ? Some home and business owners with National Flood Insurance Program policies in the Wyoming Valley are expected to see their premiums increase later this year.

According to a spokesman, the Federal Emergency Management Agency eliminated ?certain artificially low rates and discounts which are no longer sustainable? when the Biggert-Waters Act was signed into law last summer.

FEMA said policy owners with properties that have been repeatedly flooded, and people who are insuring a summer home in a flood zone will likely see the biggest rate increases later this year.

Dave Scalzo told Newswatch 16 that he dropped the flood insurance policy for his home on Susquehanna Avenue in West Pittston in 2009.

Two years later, Scalzo said his neighborhood was devastated when the Susquehanna River flooded after the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee stalled over the region.

?To come in here and see two and a half feet of water on your first floor and knowing that you don`t have flood insurance, knowing that you`re going to have to put a lot of money out of pocket into it and hopefully get help from FEMA, it was devastating,? said Scalzo.

Donna Walsh said she and other agents at Flock Insurance in Wyoming are still waiting for more information from FEMA about the changes.

?Between the homeowners insurance and being required to carry flood insurance, that`s not in the budget. It makes a huge difference,? said Walsh.

?In some instances, you can obtain a flood elevation certificate, which will lower your premium and that requires a surveyor, which is at your cost.?

Poultry probiotic cuts its coat to beat bad bacteria

Mar. 27, 2013 ? A strain of probiotic bacteria that can fight harmful bacterial infections in poultry has the ability to change its coat, according to new findings from the Institute of Food Research.

The probiotic is currently being taken forward through farm-scale trials to evaluate how well it combats Clostridium perfringens -- a cause of necrotic enteritis in poultry and the second most common cause of food poisoning in the UK

The researchers at IFR, which is strategically funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, had previously found that the probiotic Lactobacillus johnsonsii, when given to young chicks, prevents the colonisation of C. perfringens. Now, in research published in the journal PLOS ONE, they have found that the probiotic bacteria have the ability to alter their coat. They speculate that this could be one way in which the probiotic outcompete C. perfringens.

The researchers noticed when examining the bacteria that a small number of them appear smooth. They identified genes responsible for making a special coat, or slime capsule, which the bacteria surround themselves in. This protects the bacteria from stomach acids and bile salts, and helps them come together to form biofilms. It may also protect against drying out when outside the host. The natural appearance of smooth mutants could be a ploy used by the bacteria to introduce variation into its populations, making them able to take advantage of different environments.

By turning off one or more of the coat genes, they could see what effect this had on its ability to stick to gut tissues. "The next step is to understand the regulation of the genes involved in making the coat" said Dr Arjan Narbad, who led the studies. "We want to find out whether changing the coat affects the probiotic's fitness to colonise and inhabit the gut."

This in turn could prevent C. perfringens from colonising the gut. This competitive exclusion could be one reason why the probiotic strain prevents the growth of other harmful bacteria.

Understanding the role of the slime capsule coat will inform the commercial development of this strain as a preventative treatment for C. perfringens infection in poultry, especially in regard to how the probiotic is stored and produced. Through the technology transfer company Plant Bioscience Ltd, the strain has been patented and is now in large-scale farm trials to assess its efficacy. As these bacteria have previously been used in the food chain and are considered safe for human consumption, this probiotic strain could become new way of controlling C. perfringens.

As there is a growing pressure to reduce the use of antibiotics in farming, new products are needed to maintain animal welfare standards, reduce the huge costs of necrosis in poultry and help keep our food safe.

First quarter report cards: Which fighters rose above early in 2013?

Sunday will mark the end of the first quarter. It's been a busy three months in MMA, so it's a good time to look back at the past three months and see who rose above the rest.

Biggest upset: Did you expect to see Robbie Lawler walk away with the win over Josh Koscheck at UFC 157? What about Antonio Rogerio Nogueira beating former UFC light heavyweight champ Rashad Evans? But there's no question who scored the biggest upset of the first quarter of 2013. Antonio Silva's TKO of Alistair Overeem at UFC 156 left more than Overeem's jaw on the floor.

Best knockout: Vitor Belfort's knockout of Michael Bisping at the January UFC on FX was memorable, as was Tyron Woodley's 36-second dismantling of Jay Hieron at UFC 156. Wanderlei Silva, Robbie Lawler and a slew of Bellator fighters have posted impressive knockouts. But the one that had everyone talking was on "The Ultimate Fighter." Uriah Hall's knockout of Adam Cella* was perfectly executed, and had the rest of the TUF house worried about Hall's skills. For that, Hall wins knockout of the first quarter.

* The knockout actually occurred last year, but aired in the first quarter of 2013.

[Also: Video blog shows the other side of UFC's Dana White]

Best submission: For the best tapouts of the first three months of 2013, Bellator provided a nominee when Dave Vitkay choked out Jesse Peterson in just 18 seconds. Gabriel Gonzaga's guillotine of Ben Rothwell stands out, as is Ronda Rousey's arm bar of Liz Carmouche at UFC 157. The winner comes from the undercard of UFC 157 as Kenny Robertson managed a weird yet incredibly painful looking kneebar-esque submission of Brock Jardine. It was the kind of submission that left MMA fans wondering what had happened.

Best rising star: There were plenty of candidates for fighters who really made an impressive leap in the MMA world early in 2013. Jordan Mein's UFC debut at UFC 158 included rolling out of an arm bar with Dan Miller, and then knocking him out before the first round ended. Abel Trujillo's TKO win by knees to the body of Marcus Levesseur was pretty fantastic, too. But it's Trujillo's opponent at UFC 160, Khabib Nurmagomedov who is taking home the prize. His TKO of Thiago Tavares in Brazil showed he can fight well under any conditions.

Best fight: Johny Hendricks and Carlos Condit put on a great scrap at UFC 158. Brian Stann and Wanderlei Silva's bout was thrilling before Stann was knocked out. Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson's title fight at UFC on Fox 6 was memorable, as was Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo's title bout at UFC 156. The one fight that stood out above the rest, though, was Dennis Bermudez and Matt Grice's fight from UFC 156. Throughout the bout, both fighters should have given up. Both fighters should have been knocked out. But neither man gave in. Bermudez won the decision, but both fighters will be remembered for this bout.

Syria's leader appeals to African summit for help

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syria's embattled and increasingly isolated president has appealed to the leaders of a five-nation economic forum meeting in South Africa to help end his country's two-year conflict.

President Bashar Assad says Syria is being subjected to "acts of terrorism backed by Arab, regional and Western nations" ? a reference to the Western-backed opposition fighting his regime.

Assad's appeal came in a letter sent to the BRICS forum of emerging market powers. The World Bank says these countries ? Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa ? are driving global economic growth.

Assad's letter was published by Syria's state media on Wednesday.

Syria's crisis began in March 2011 with protests demanding Assad's ouster. Following a harsh government crackdown, the uprising steadily grew more violent until it became a full-fledged civil war.

SAfrica: Mandela in hospital with lung infection

(AP) ? South Africa says Nelson Mandela has been admitted to a hospital with a lung infection.

The office of President Jacob Zuma said in a statement Thursday that the 94-year-old former president and anti-apartheid leader went to the hospital just before midnight on Wednesday.

The statement says Mandela is being treated for a "recurrence of his lung infection" and that doctors are ensuring he has the best possible treatment.

Zuma wished Mandela a speedy recovery and he urged South Africans and the world to pray for the former leader and his family. Mandela has become increasingly frail in recent years.

Going, going, gone - dodo bone up for sale in London

LONDON (Reuters) - A rare four-inch fragment of a dodo bone will go on sale in Britain in April, around 300 years after the flightless bird and icon of obsolescence was hunted to extinction.

Auctioneers Christie's said on Wednesday it was hoping to raise as much as 15,000 pounds ($22,600) for the piece of a bird's femur.

The last sale of dodo remains the auction house could find took place in London in 1934 - and it was expecting considerable interest from a highly specialised band of collectors and enthusiasts.

"It is so rare for anyone to part with these prized items," said James Hyslop, head of Travel, Science and Natural History at Christie's auction house in South Kensington, London.

"From its appearance in "Alice in Wonderland" to the expression 'dead as dodo', the bird has cemented its place in our cultural heritage," he added.

The Western world first heard of dodos in 1598 when Dutch sailors reported seeing them on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius.

Less than 100 years later, the birds had disappeared. Most experts say they were probably hunted down by successive waves of hungry sailors, and the pigs and other large animals they brought on to the island.

No complete specimens have survived - and scientists have been pouring over fragments of remains for years to try and reconstruct what the dodo might have looked like.

The famous image of a squat, comic, short-necked bird, immortalised in John Tenniel's illustrations for "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", is widely thought to be wrong.

Christie's did not say whether the thigh bone, part of an unnamed private English collection, would provide any fresh clues.

The auction house said its bone was almost certainly excavated in 1865 at Mare aux Songes in Mauritius during a dig by natural history enthusiast George Clark.

The bone is one of 260 lots in a Travel, Science and Natural History sale held by Christie's in London on April 24. The items are open to public viewing from April 20.

Other items on the block include a fossilised egg from Madagascar's equally extinct elephant bird, more than 100 times the average size of a chicken egg, as well as scientific instruments, maps and globes.

Energy surcharge by hotels in the VI?? - USVI Moving Center

It's becoming more and more popular. I have been seeing $30 per day at a wide range of resorts throughout the Caribbean, not just in the VI.

From a timing perspective, it became much more attractive for Hotels to feel like they could get away with these fees when the arilines started in earnest with the ala carte fees for bags, choosing seats, etc. on top of the rates.

Personally as a consumer, I would prefer these businesses just give me one figure, with all taxes, "Resort Fees", "Energy Fees", etc. when I make a reservation. Who do they think they're fooling? Is the general public that stupid???

BANGKOK (AP) -- The multibillion-dollar trade in illegal wildlife ? clandestine trafficking that has driven iconic creatures like the tiger to near-extinction ? is also threatening the survival of great apes, a new U.N. report says.

Endangered chimpanzees, orangutans, gorillas and bonobos are disappearing from the wild in frightening numbers, as private owners pay top dollar for exotic pets, while disreputable zoos, amusement parks and traveling circuses clamor for smuggled primates to entertain audiences.

More than 22,000 great apes are estimated to have been traded illegally over a seven-year period ending in 2011. That's about 3,000 a year; more than half are chimpanzees, the U.N. report said.

"These great apes make up an important part of our natural heritage. But as with all things of value, great apes are used by man for commercial profit and the illegal trafficking of the species constitutes a serious threat to their existence," Henri Djombo, a government minister from the Republic of Congo, was quoted as saying.

The U.N. report paints a dire picture of the fight to protect vulnerable and dwindling flora and fauna from organized criminal networks that often have the upper hand.

Apes are hunted in their own habitats, which are concentrated in central and western Africa, by sophisticated smugglers who transport them on private cargo planes using small airstrips in the African bush. Their destination is usually the Middle East and Asia.

In countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Lebanon, great apes are purchased to display as show pieces in private gardens and menageries.

In Asia, the animals are typically destined for public zoos and amusement parks. China is a main destination for gorillas and chimpanzees. Thailand and Cambodia have recorded cases of orangutans being used for entertainment in "clumsy boxing matches," the report said.

Lax enforcement and corruption make it easy to smuggle the animals through African cities like Nairobi, Kenya, and Khartoum, Sudan, which are trafficking hubs. Bangkok, the Thai capital, is a major hub for the orangutan trade.

Conditions are usually brutal. In February 2005, customs officials at the Nairobi airport seized a large crate that had arrived from Egypt. The crate held six chimpanzees and four monkeys, stuffed into tiny compartments. The crate had been refused at the airport in Cairo, a well-known trafficking hub for shipment to the Middle East, and returned to Kenya. One chimp died of hunger and thirst.

The proliferation of logging and mining camps throughout Africa has also increased the demand for primate meat. Adults and juveniles are killed for consumption, and their orphans are captured to sell into the live trade. Villagers also pluck primates out of rural areas to sell in the cities.

Humans also have been encroaching upon and destroying the primates' natural habitats, destroying their forest homes to build infrastructure and for other purposes. That forces the animals to move into greater proximity and conflict with people.

Sometimes animals are even the victims of war.

Arrests are rare largely because authorities in Africa, where most great apes originate, do not have the policing resources to cope with the criminal poaching networks. Corruption is rampant and those in authority sometimes are among those dealing in the illegal trade. Between 2005 and 2011, only 27 arrests were made in Africa and Asia.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) regulates the trade of animals and plants to ensure their survival. Under the agreement, trade in great apes caught in the wild is illegal. But traffickers often get around that by falsely declaring animals as bred in captivity.

The orangutan is the only great ape found in Asia. One species, the Sumatran orangutan, is critically endangered, with its population having dropped by 80 percent over the last 75 years. Their numbers are in great peril due to the pace of land clearance and forest destruction for industrial or agricultural use.

The report estimates that nearly all of the orangutan's natural habitat will be disturbed or destroyed by the year 2030.

"There are no wild spaces left for them," said Douglas Cress, a co-author of the report and head of a U.N. sponsored program that works for the survival of great apes. "There'll be nothing left at this rate. It's down to the bone. If it disappears, they go, too."

Scientists confirm first 2-headed bull shark

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Scientists have confirmed the discovery of the first-ever, two-headed bull shark.

The study, led by Michigan State University and appearing in the Journal of Fish Biology, confirmed the specimen, found in the Gulf of Mexico April 7, 2011, was a single shark with two heads, rather than conjoined twins.

There have been other species of sharks, such as blue sharks and tope sharks, born with two heads. This is the first record of dicephalia in a bull shark, said Michael Wagner, MSU assistant professor of fisheries and wildlife, who confirmed the discovery with colleagues at the Florida Keys Community College.

"This is certainly one of those interesting and rarely detected phenomena," Wagner said. "It's good that we have this documented as part of the world's natural history, but we'd certainly have to find many more before we could draw any conclusions about what caused this."

The difficulty of finding such oddities is due, in part, to creatures with abnormalities dying shortly after birth. In this instance, a fisherman found the two-headed shark when he opened the uterus of an adult shark. The two-headed shark died shortly thereafter and had little, if any, chance to survive in the wild, Wagner added.

"You'll see many more cases of two-headed lizards and snakes," he said. "That's because those organisms are often bred in captivity, and the breeders are more likely to observe the anomalies."

The shark was brought to the marine science department at Florida Keys Community College. From there, it was transported to Michigan State's campus for further examination.

Wagner and his team were able to detail the discovery with magnetic resonance imaging. Without damaging the unique specimen, the MRIs revealed two distinct heads, hearts and stomachs with the remainder of the body joining together in back half of the animal to form a single tail.

As part of the published brief, Wagner noted that some may want to attribute the deformed shark to exposure to pollutants.

"Given the timing of the shark's discovery with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, I could see how some people may want to jump to conclusions," Wagner said. "Making that leap is unwarranted. We simply have no evidence to support that cause or any other."
