3 hurt, homes burn in huge S. Calif. wildfire

BANNING, Calif. (AP) ? An out-of-control wildfire growing with great speed in Southern California mountains Wednesday night burned homes, forced about 1,500 residents and campers to evacuate and left three people including two firefighters injured.

The fire broke out about 2 p.m. near Banning and surged to at least 6,000 acres, or more than 9 square miles, within a few hours, state fire officials said.

One civilian was burned and airlifted to a hospital, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said in a statement. Two firefighters were also injured and both were taken to hospitals by ambulance. Officials would give no further details on the injuries.

Fire officials said about a dozen structures were damaged or destroyed, but could not say how many were homes. Footage from TV news helicopters and photos from the scene showed several houses in flames.

They include the Twin Pines home of Dave Clark, whose parents were killed in a house fire in Riverside in April 2012 the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported. Prosecutors alleged Clark's sister Deborah Clark set the fire, and she was awaiting a mental-competency hearing to see if she was competent to stand trial for her parents' murder in a case that has received extensive local media coverage.

A photograph taken by the Desert Sun newspaper showed Clark talking on his cellphone with the home fully engulfed in flames behind him.

"He said he lost everything, he couldn't talk," brother Jeff Clark told the Press-Enterprise.

About 800 people evacuated the Silent Valley Club, a private RV resort, state fire spokesman Lucas Spelman said.

About 700 more were under evacuation order in the rural communities of Poppet Flats, Twin Pines, Edna Valley and Vista Grande, and evacuation centers were set up at high schools in Hemet and Banning. The communities are in the San Jacinto Mountains along Interstate 10 some 80 miles east of Los Angeles.

Margaret Runnels of Poppet Flats was at work when her house came under an evacuation order. She was in Banning waiting for her husband to collect pets and valuables from their house.

"I was hoping they would let me back up to get some personal items I knew my husband would forget like a jewelry box and stuff that means stuff," a crying Runnels told the Desert Sun. "You always tell yourself to prepare everything but you never take the stupid time to do it."

Some residents and sheriff's deputies helping them evacuate were temporarily left without an escape route when both sides of State Route 243 were blocked by the fire, forcing them to take shelter in place.

"There was an area in there that got trapped in the middle," state fire spokeswoman Julie Hutchinson said.

They were later able to safely evacuate, according to state fire spokeswoman Jody Hagemann, who said she had no further details.

More than 500 firefighters, helped by five helicopters and five air tankers, were working to protect homes and get ahead of the flames. All but three helicopters were grounded after night fall but were set to return to the air Thursday morning.

Temperatures in the area were in the high 80s and low 90s on Wednesday, with winds blowing up to 20 mph.

Master Internet Marketing Strategies With These Top Tips | Maw ...

How to earn more Online with Online marketing ?
Are you finding the information on internet marketing strategies confusing? Perhaps you are finding much of the information contradictory? If so, you are not alone. That's the reason why we developed our website. We spent time trying to gather the facts for ourselves, unfortunately, what we found didn't help us make decisions at all.

Have a look at the article below. It presents the facts in such an easy language that we were able to understand it immediately. If it helps clear the fog for you, please let your friends know about our website, as it might be useful for them also.

?

Internet marketing is no easy feat. There are an overwhelming number of opportunities for you to post ads, reach out to potential customers and send out your marketing slogans. However, how to start off and keep organized throughout the process, is easier than you might think. Take a look at the tips offered in this article and you will find yourself on the way to your internet marketing goals in no time.

Effective internet marketing involves including information that is geared for all of your readers. Some people are very knowledgeable about the product you are selling, and others may have just come across it recently. Include basic information about the product using simple terms and then add complicated technical information. This will help you increase sales by providing a little something for everyone.

While it is true that a lot of Internet marketers are able to advertise their sites and products without spending money at all, this is something that is incredibly rare. Blog businesses hosted on free sites that make 50k a year are pretty much dying off. You will need to invest some money, if only for a legitimate website and some keyword campaigns.

Successful internet marketing depends upon your products being easily and readily available. If your products are easy to order, you will have increased sales. So try to look at things from a customer's viewpoint, even going as far as to buy some of your own products. This way you will know if there are any issues with the ordering process. If you come across any difficulties, don't hesitate to fix them.

Err on the side of caution if you are unsure of what font or style to choose for your website. Not everyone will have perfect sight, especially the older visitors to your page, so use a font that is clear, large and legible if you want to improve the overall experience of your visitors.

Use videos to advertise your website. Online videos are the latest craze in internet marketing. Many sites use online video sharing sites to link videos about their website to the site itself. It is among the latest, cutting edge methods of marketing today. If expense is a concern, there are plenty of low-budget options available.

It's well known that writing articles with unique content is an effective online marketing technique. However, knowing how to format those articles to make them appealing to potential buyers is another matter. Studies have shown that people tend to skim online articles. So how can you use this information to your advantage? Write articles with bulleted lists, emphasize key words or phrases by capitalizing or underlining them or by using bold or italicized letters, use subheadings and keep your paragraphs short and to the point.

If you don't have the full skill set needed to start with Internet Marketing you shouldn't fret. Internet marketing is great because there is a lot of hands on experience available. The best way to start is simply to start. Find a very basic domain name and see what you can do to improve it.

It is important to make the internet marketing experience for your customer as pleasant as possible by providing a website that doesn't look cheap. If you can't afford a professional website design, consider taking a low cost course at a local county college and spruce up your site with the tips that you learn.

No matter what you're changing about your business, whether it's a big change or a simple change of page layout, make sure you tell your customers about it. Keep them informed on everything that's happening with your business. This is easy to do with mass mailers, so there's no excuse not to do it.

Avoid spam, deceitful tricks, and scams. Doing business this way can be tempting at times, especially when the internet feels so anonymous, but they are not worth the potential loss. Tactics such as these might bring a short-term money gain, but they will ruin your reputation and could potentially destroy the business you have worked so hard to create.

Cancer screenings held at Chargers camp

SAN DIEGO - For the crowds of more than 2,000, day three of Chargers training camp was more than just about getting a glimpse of their favorite player.

It was also about taking a proactive approach against one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer, melanoma, which kills one person every hour.

It hits close to home for those living in California. This year alone, about 8,500 people are expected to be diagnosed with skin cancer.?

The Chargers teamed up with Melanoma Exposed and offered free skin cancer screenings.

Among those in line was Vincent Brown Sr., the father of Chargers wide receiver Vincent Brown.

"My dad passed away when he was 72 and we don't know what kind of cancer he had, and I wanted to get checked out," said Brown Sr.

Doctors told him he had nothing to worry about, but not everyone gets that same news.

John Garcia was diagnosed last December with stage-three skin cancer.

"I grew up here all my life and I never wore sunscreen and I hung out at the beach," Garcia said.

It is a story doctors say is all too familiar as men are two times more likely to die from melanoma compared to women, which is why yearly screenings are important.

After Saturday's stop in San Diego, the Melanoma Expose team will be visiting other cities and make stops at other football camps.

Police: $53 million in jewels stolen in Cannes

PARIS (AP) ? A staggering 40 million euro ($53 million) worth of diamonds and other jewels were stolen Sunday from the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes, in one of Europe's biggest jewelry heists in recent years, police said.

The hotel in the sweltering French Riviera was hosting a temporary jewelry exhibit over the summer from the prestigious Leviev diamond house, which is owned by Israeli billionaire Lev Leviev.

A police spokesman said the theft took place around noon, but he could not confirm local media reports that the robber was a single gunman who stuffed a suitcase with the gems before making a swift exit. The spokesman spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter on the record.

Several police officers were placed in front of the Carlton exhibition room to prevent journalists and photographers gathered at the scene from entering.

The luxury Carlton hotel is situated on the exclusive Promenade de la Croisette that stretches a mile and a half along the French Riviera, and is thronged by the rich and famous throughout the year. The hotel's position provides not only a beautiful view of the sea, but an easy get away for potential jewel thieves along the long stretch of road.

The valuable gems were supposed to be on public display until the end of August. It was not immediately clear how many pieces were stolen.

Hotel officials would not comment, and attempts to reach Leviev or his company were not immediately successful.

Several brazen jewelry thefts have taken place this year, including one in Belgium on Feb. 18 that involved some $50 million worth of diamonds.

In that heist, the stones from the global diamond center of Antwerp had been loaded on a plane headed to Zurich when robbers dressed in dark police clothing and hoods drove through a hole they'd cut in the Brussels Airport fence in two black cars with blue police lights flashing. They drove onto the tarmac, approached the plane, brandished machine guns, offloaded the diamonds, then left in an operation that took barely five minutes.

Authorities have since detained dozens of people and recovered much of the stolen treasure in that operation.

In May, Cannes was struck by two highly publicized jewelry heists during the Cannes Film Festival.

In the first theft, robbers stole about $1 million worth of jewels after ripping a safe from the wall of a hotel room. The jewelry was taken from the Novotel room of an employee of Chopard, the Swiss-based watch and jewelry maker that has loaned bling to A-list stars walking the red carpet at the film festival.

And in the second, thieves outsmarted 80 security guards in an exclusive hotel and made off with a De Grisogono necklace that creators say is worth 2 million euros ($2.6 million.)

Jewel thieves have been getting attention in Europe in more ways than one.

On Thursday, a member of the notorious "Pink Panther" jewel thief gang escaped from a Swiss prison after accomplices rammed a gate and overpowered guards with bursts from their AK-47s, police said.

Milan Poparic fled with fellow inmate Adrian Albrecht from the Orbe prison in the western state of Vaud.

Police say the Pink Panthers network's members are prime suspects in a series of daring thefts. According to Interpol, the group has targeted luxury watch and jewelry stores in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the United States, netting more than ?330 million (?285m) since 1999.

Poparic is the third member of the Pink Panthers to escape from a Swiss prison in as many months, according to Vaud police.

Treasury's Lew: Congress needs to pass debt limit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress needs to raise the debt limit and take away the "cloud of uncertainty" about the nation's ability to pay its bills, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

"The fight over the debt limit in 2011 hurt the economy, even though, in the end, we saw an extension of the debt limit. We saw confidence fall, and it hurt the economy. Congress needs to do its job. It needs to finish its work on appropriation bills. It needs to pass a debt limit," Lew said on NBC's "Meet The Press."

Senior lawmakers on Capitol Hill are trying to come up with must-do legislation to keep federal agencies running after Sept. 30 and prevent the possibility of a government shutdown. At issue is what is normally routine: a plug-the-gap measure to fund the government for a few weeks or months until a deal can be worked out on appropriations bills giving agencies their operating budgets for the full 2014 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

However, some Democrats don't want to vote to continue to fund the government at new, lower levels mandated by the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration. And some conservatives are making a last stand against President Barack Obama's new health care law. In addition, Senate Democrats are resistant to a $20 billion spending cut wanted by many Republicans.

Lew maintains that the president won't negotiate over the debt limit.

"The mere fact of negotiating over the debt limit, after 2011, would introduce this notion that somehow there's a question about whether or not we're going to pay our bills, whether or not we're going to protect the full faith and credit of the United States," Lew said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." ''Well, it's not OK to default. Congress can't let us default."

"(Congress) has to stop looking for what's the last possible moment," Lew told "Fox News Sunday." ''They should get back after they take their time off in August and they should finish their work and get it done so that there's no uncertainty about America's ability to pay its bills."

Separately, Lew said no federal bailout is in the works for the city of Detroit, which recently filed for bankruptcy protection. Pressed as to why the government chose to bail out big banks, the auto industry and others, but isn't assisting the city, Lew said on CNN's "State of the Union" that the government has been giving Detroit technical advice and has made resources available to help take down blighted properties through federal programs.

But Lew said that the situation in 2009-2010 that warranted the other bailouts was "unique," and that the current problems that Detroit has with its creditors, "it's going to have to work out with its creditors."
